Dr. Pruchno was invited to discuss her memoir, Surrounded By Madness at a lecture sponsored by the Woman’s Club of Washington University.
Although increased awareness has decreased stigma about serious mental illness, many people still keep secrets about their own mental illness and that of their family members. Dr. Pruchno’s mother and her adopted daughter struggled with serious mental illness. In her memoir, Dr. Pruchno shows how the toxic combination of mental illness and family secrets can destroy families. In her lecture, Dr. Pruchno addressed what must be done to better the lives of people with serious mental illness and their families.
